Savaad Felich

A week ago, I set off in the rain and the cold to visit Savaad Felich at his  studio in Toolangi. The Yarra Valley looks wonderful on a sunny day with blue skies hovering over the landscape.  It's a funny thing, but even with the rain and the fog over the hilltops it still looked gorgeous. Everything looked green and crisp. What a great pleasure that trip was. I really do love the Yarra Valley.

Savaad's name has appeared on Isiiad once before.  When he's not having the time of his life in his studio, he's busy in his role as the Exhibition Coordinator at Yering Station. (The Yering Station Sculpture Prize is soon to get under way there.) With involvement in the Yarra Valley Arts Council, Savaad is very well placed to have his finger of the pulse of things pertaining to the arts in the Yarra Valley.

What is it they say about a busy person? That they can always fit in something extra. It's certainly true of Savaad. He's also a participating artist in the Yarra Valley Open Studios program. This weekend studios will be open for the second time.  The weather looks like it's set to shine down on the Yarra Valley with two days in the mid 20's forecast.  Perfect studio 'hopping' weather.

Savaad's sculptures have evolved over the years. He's moved away from his original focus on wood carving "...to construction/assemblage and working with found objects. From being meticulous and methodical- to being more immediate, loose and unconstrained." He admits to being very much inspired by the work of Rosalie Gascoigne, who made wonderful works of art from found objects. (Incidentally, Tarrawarra Museum of Art is currently showing some of her work as part of its "Boundary Line" exhibition.) These photos attest to the fact that Savaad is a bower bird.  He collects wood and other three dimensional bits and pieces which he turns into whimsical sculptures with a unique character.

The resultant work is fun, reflecting the very reason Savaads sculpts, which "...comes down to being happy and playing in the studio." Life doesn't get any better than that!

If you would like to see a happy man, doing what he loves, in the midst of a beautiful place, pop Savaad Felich on your Yarra Valley Open Studio Itinerary immediately. You will find him in his studio at 1735 Kinglake-Healesville Rd Toolangi on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September between 10am and 5pm.

Like Antonio Villella, Savaad has exhibited at Marti Portfolio.
