New York Rainwater Tanks
I've been fascinated with New York rainwater tanks since I saw pictures of Rupert Murdochs apartment in Soho. The design of it's makeover (masterminded by my all time favourite designer Christian Liaigre) incorporates a very clever use of the existing water tank. Most rainwater tanks in New York are no longer used for that purpose, but in their infinite wisdom, the New York powers that be have made it impossible to remove them. Thank goodness. The Murdoch apartment is a fabulous example of rethinking and reusing. The steel superstructure under the water tank was turned into a master bathroom. Brilliant. The shape provided by the superstructure lent a gothic cathedral touch to the bathroom's eventual interior structure. Add to that, the fixtures and fittings and you have all of the luxurious calm typical of Liaigre's exceptional work. Sighhh
These pics were taken in and around the West Village and Chelsea on a glorious New York winters day in December of last year. I love the way the rainwater tanks punctuate the geometry of the skyline.
If you would like to see pics of the Murdoch apartment, hunt down a copy of "Maison: Christian Liaigre" by Herbert Ypma, Thames and Hudson.
